Bartenders Grace
We lost an excellent horse on September 28, 2001
Maudie's first filly really resembled her dam in both build and disposition.
She was standing at probably 15.2 in 2001 and was one of those horses that loved people.  We thought she broke her humerous bone the summer of 1999, but we found out on September 13, 2001 that it was her elbow, which meant that even though she had done amazingly well, even to the surprise of the KSU vets, there was only a slight chance that she could be much more than a pet since they didn't recommend breeding her again without having a surgery to restore the elbow.
The surgery was done, but didn't hold due to the time it had been since the initial injury two years ago.
The last time I seen her was September 25 and you could tell that she was very uncomfortable.  The call came on September 28 telling us that the plate they had put in had broken and that there was nothing else they could do and there was really only one option and that was to put her down, we decided that was the only thing we could do, unfortunately.
The poor girl had been through a lot and was really a tough horse.
She had surgery November 28, 2000 to have the deep flexor tendon cut to release the toe on her right leg so she could use that bad leg.
I had hopes of breaking her out just to be a walk/trot horse, but that won't ever happen.
I did have proof on March 17, 2001 that she would've broke out easily.  I put my 8-year old nephew on her at the pasture gate with no halter and my nephew struggling to get on since I was also trying to hold her neck and stay close to him at the same time.  She just stood there calmly and turned around to smell my nephew's foot after he was on.  He sat there for probably 2-3 minutes and she was content.
She was bred in the spring of 2001 to Ciclone Socks, so we not only lost a very good horse, we also lost a baby.
Maudie has produced three very nice horses in both disposition and conformation,
so I will just have to wait for her to throw another nice filly like Gracie.
